Cricket enjoys largest viewership behind Football and NBA. It is second widely spread sport in the world as well. China, Hong Kong, Nepal, UAE and many European Nations have teams trying to rise up the ranks in Cricket Associate Nation tournaments. While 8 nations dominate currently, soon, many nations hope to change that like Afghanistan. With T20I cricket on the rise, major nations are looking to adapt and grow. Also, IPL fetching huge numbers in viewership and broadcast rights, has triggered many nations to look at Cricket.
Hence, LA Olympics has proposed to IOC to accept the inclusion of Cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse, Squash and Baseball-softball. Olympics have beach volleyball, badminton, atheltics, shooting, wrestling and many others as well. But the viewership for most is lesser compared to Football and Cricket. Keeping that in view, LA Olympics has planned to include 6-nation T20I tournament in 2028 just like 2022 Asian Games. Men and Women teams will qualify to this 6-nation tournament.
IOC members have met to take a decision about the inclusion in Mumbai. And they have accepted for these games to be part of the event. Cricket nations have been busy with ICC T20I and ICC ODI and ICC Champions trophy kind of events. Never they have pressurised Olympics committee or other multi-nation big events to include Cricket. Asian Games have decided to try it and T20I format suits it too. Hence, Cricket debut in Olympics will be a grand success, one anticipates!
