Australia and South Africa are playing 3 Test Series in Australia, as part of the on-going World Test Championship. If Australia whitewashes South Africa, at home, then India will have a definitive chance when Australia visits India for almost last series before WTC Finals. India played against New Zealand in the previous and inaugural WTC final and now, they have clear cut chance with Australia almost certain to whitewash South Africa.
Australia won Boxing Day Test on 4th day with an innings and 182 runs lead. In the first Test, on a difficulty pitch, Australia pulled off a 2-Day win and now, they have defeated South Africa with an innings difference. Well, New Years’ Eve Test at Sydney could be another one-sided affair if South Africa batsmen continue to struggle. With more than 380 run deficit, South Africa never looked like even giving a competition to Australia.
Temba Bavuma made 65 runs off 144 balls and he is the only batsman to show some resistance to Australia aggression. Sarel Erwee (21), Theunis de Bruyn (28), Kyle Verreynne (33), Keshav Maharaj (13), Lungi Ngidi (19) showed aggression against moving ball but failed to construct partnerships like AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis or Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis. The famous South Africa retaliation and grit found to be absent, when team most needed them to survive.
South Africa bundled out for 204 in their second innings and Nathan Lyon (3/58), Steven Smith (1/9), Scott Boland (2/49), Pat Cummins (1/20) and Mitchell Starc (1/62) did well for Australia. This will be a crushing defeat for South Africa and players morale will be down before Sydney Test. Let’s see if South Africa can bounce back and at least give a contest to Australia. David Warner, who scored 200 in his 100th Test got Player of the Match award.
