Australia and India have locked horns for World Test Championship 2023 Final, in short, WTC Final. India dominated the 2019-2021 cycle and reached finals in 2021. New Zealand outwitted India in a rain affected game and won the 2021 WTC trophy. Now, Australia outwitted India in Oval and won 2023 championship. Travis Head and Steve Smith scored centuries on Day one, putting India on back foot. Australia never let India recover after first Day and they won the test by 209 runs. India got bowled out for 234 in the second innings.
India needed to score 444 runs to win the match on final day. Australia got Virat Kohli early on Day 5 and only, Srikar Bharat resisted a while. India did not have a chance to come back after Day one. Rohit Sharma felt the same and stated that Travis Head innings put them off guard. He congratulated Australia and stated that India fought well but couldn’t come back.
Virat Kohli(49), Ajinkya Rahane(46) and Srikar Bharat(23) to some extent showed resistance. Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja got out in the same over. Australia desperately needed Ajinkya Rahane wicket and Mitchell Starc got it for them. Nathan Lyon got 4/41 and helped Australia in wrapping up the match quickly on Day 5. Auatralia has become second team to win Test Mace after WTC has been announced. Oceania teams New Zealand and Australia have won the mace twice and both the times against India in England.
