Tech Layoffs 2026: ‘Layoffs’ are creating waves in the global tech market. The famous multinational company Oracle (Oracle) has recently become a sensation when it fired 25,000 employees. It is noteworthy that there are 12,000 victims in India alone. In the wake of these developments, the latest report released by ‘Trading Platforms’ is causing serious concern to IT experts.
According to the latest report, more than 10 lakh people have lost their jobs in the tech sector worldwide since 2021. In the first quarter (Q1) of this year alone, 80,000 people were laid off by companies. An estimate is that by the end of 2026, this number is likely to cross 3 lakh. Oracle laid off 25,000 jobs, while Amazon laid off nearly 16,000. And when it comes to Meta (Facebook), this company has fired around 2,400 people. Of these total layoffs, 77% (over 61,000 jobs) were lost in the US.
Situation in India..
Outside the US, Australia (4,450) and India (over 2,000) in Asia faced job cuts. 28,000 jobs were lost, mainly in the cloud computing and software-as-a-service (SAAS) sectors, and 19,000 in the e-commerce sector. Artificial intelligence seems to be the main reason for these massive layoffs. Half of the layoffs in 2026 will be due to AI and automation, the report said. But analysts point out that even though companies are making profits, these decisions are aimed at cutting costs so that they can invest in AI in the future.
What should IT professionals do?
According to several leading IT experts, employees and companies have failed to recognize the impact of AI early. “Mere multitasking is not enough. IT experts suggest that you focus on upskilling (learning new skills). You have to increase your ‘value’ to make the company feel that you are indispensable,” he told employees. On the other hand, trade unions (such as NITES) strongly object to the dismissal of employees even when companies are making huge profits. They want the government to intervene in this.
