Fuel Price Hike: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday sharply criticised the Centre over the latest fuel price hike, saying ordinary citizens are being forced to bear the burden of the government’s “mistakes.”
His remarks came after petrol and diesel prices were increased by ₹3 per litre across India amid rising global crude oil prices linked to tensions in West Asia.
Rahul Gandhi On Fuel Price Hike:
Reacting to the hike, Rahul Gandhi accused the Narendra Modi-led government of pushing the financial burden onto common people.
In a post on X, he said, “The fault lies with the Modi government;
The public will pay the price. The ₹3 shock has already hit; The remaining dues will be recovered in installments..”
The Congress leader claimed that citizens are already struggling with inflation and rising household expenses, and the fuel hike will worsen the situation further.
गलती मोदी सरकार की,
कीमत जनता चुकाएगी।₹3 का झटका आ चुका,
बाकी वसूली क़िस्तों में की जाएगी।— Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) May 15, 2026
Oil marketing companies on Friday raised petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre each following pressure from soaring global crude oil prices.
According to reports, petrol in Delhi is now priced at ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel costs ₹99.67 per litre. The increase is expected to impact transportation, food prices and daily household expenses.
BJP Defends The Fuel Hike
The BJP defended the decision, stating that India’s fuel price increase remains lower compared to several other countries affected by the global energy crisis.
Party leaders argued that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has severely impacted crude oil prices worldwide and the government is attempting to minimise the burden on citizens.
Several opposition leaders have criticised the fuel hike, warning that it could trigger another wave of inflation.
Political parties claimed the increase would directly affect transport costs, food prices and essential commodities, putting additional pressure on middle-class and lower-income families.
