The Andhra Pradesh government has officially launched a large-scale tourism initiative named Akhanda Godavari, led by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The foundation stone was laid during a formal ceremony on Thursday, attended by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, marking the start of what is expected to be a transformational project for the region.
The Akhanda Godavari project aims to develop the East and West Godavari districts into a major tourist hub by connecting several cultural, spiritual, and natural attractions along the Godavari River. The initiative will link key temples, riverbanks, and lakes—many of which are currently underdeveloped or overlooked—into a single, accessible tourism circuit. The plan is to draw both domestic and international tourists by offering a unique blend of nature and spirituality.
The project will be funded with the help of the central government under India’s national tourism development scheme, and the first phase is estimated to cost around ₹1,000 crore. The development will include better road access, eco-friendly facilities, guided tours, and improved amenities like hotels, houseboats, and boating services.
One of the main focuses of the project is to preserve and clean the Godavari River. Inspired by the Ganga river clean-up in Uttar Pradesh, the state plans to introduce strict anti-pollution measures, eliminate plastic use along the riverbanks, and promote sustainable tourism practices. There are also plans to involve local communities to ensure that development benefits residents through job creation and income opportunities.
Speaking at the event, Pawan Kalyan expressed his strong commitment to protecting the cultural and environmental significance of the Godavari region. “This is not just a project, it’s a dream to bring global attention to our heritage while supporting local growth,” he said. “We want to make the Godavari a source of pride and prosperity for generations to come.”
The government hopes that Akhanda Godavari will not only boost tourism revenue but also preserve the historical and ecological value of the region. Visitors can expect a mix of peaceful pilgrimage experiences and scenic relaxation, making the Godavari circuit an all-in-one destination.
