Mallikarjuna Kharge becomes new INC President

Mallikarjuna Kharge has comprehensively beat his opponent Shashi Tharoor and became the new Indian National Congress President (Elect). Soon, he will take charge as the President too.

Mallikarjuna Kharge has comprehensively beat his opponent Shashi Tharoor and became the new Indian National Congress President (Elect). Soon, he will take charge as the President too. Mallikarjuna Kharge fought the elections for INC President post as Shashi Tharoor pushed for elections. As per, “One Man One Post” policy, Rahul Gandhi took the decision to not take a party post but become the PM aspirant from Congress against NDA leader, PM Narendra Modi.

Ashok Gehlot and Digvijay Singh have been asked to pull out by senior members and Gandhi family even though both also expressed their desire to be next President. Mallikarjuna Kharge only participated in the election, after estimating his winning chances.

Polling for the President post took place on 18th October and on 19th October, counting of the votes has been finished. Total number of votes polled are 9385 and Shashi Tharoor bagged 1072. Total 416 votes have been deemed invalid and Mallikarjuna Kharge bagged 7897 votes. After Sitaram Kesari, Mallikarjuna Kharge will be the second Non-Gandhi family member to become INC President, in these two decades.

Shashi Tharoor congratulated Mallikarjuna Kharge on his win and thanked Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi for taking a decision that is right for the party. He thanked them for always working in favor of party and helping build it, under all conditions and even in difficult situation. Mallikarjuna Kharge asked senior members and INC supporters, party workers to help him in taking party forward with the help of Gandhi family.
