National media reports today said that a 40-member general body of Samyukta Kisan Morcha will today be making it clear that a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price is non-negotiable. After the repealing of the three farm laws recently, the farmers leaders want the Centre to make MSP a legal guarantee.
MSPs are announced for 24 crops. But never before has any government given them statutory backing. If it is done, there will be severe economic costs, commentators are saying.
Those with knowledge of economics are urging the Centre to not budge on the issue of MSP guarantee. “The farmers groups want maximalist demands to be accepted by the government by threatening street thuggery. If the government caves in, there will be a shortage of funds for other purposes,” commentators are saying.
