The Vijayawada Metro Rail project is taking steady steps forward, with plans to improve public transport and ease traffic in the city. The project covers two corridors, adding up to 38.40 kilometers and including 33 stations.
Phase one includes Corridor 1A, stretching from Gannavaram to PNBS (22 km), and Corridor 1B, from PNBS to Penamaluru (11 km). Officials confirmed that land acquisition is currently in progress and is being handled according to the rules.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha recently reviewed the project during a meeting held at the Collectorate. He was joined by Krishna District Collector D.K. Balaji, NTR Joint Collector S. Ilakkiya, VMC Commissioner Dhyan Chand HM, and APMRCL Deputy CGM P. Ranga Rao.
The meeting also covered the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which is almost complete. The CMP is designed to guide transport planning based on future growth, especially as Vijayawada plays a key role as a gateway to the upcoming capital city, Amaravati.
Officials from several departments, including Roads & Buildings, National Highways, Police, RTC, Airport Authority, and the Municipal Corporation, were part of the planning discussions. Krishna Collector D.K. Balaji confirmed full support for the project in his district.
The draft mobility plan was presented by Ankush Malhotra from Systra MVA Consulting (India) Pvt. Ltd. He explained that the plan is built on detailed surveys of traffic, households, and road safety. It takes into account Vijayawada’s current and future needs for the next 25 to 30 years.
