In the high-profile case of the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, one of the main accused, Monojit Mishra, has told his lawyers that the marks found on his body are not from an assault but are instead “love bites”.

Monojit Mishra, who was arrested shortly after the gang-rape case incident on 25 June, reportedly made this claim during a conversation with his lawyer, denying the allegations and suggesting that he is being unfairly portrayed as the villain. However, medical reports noted fresh scratch marks believed to be caused by fingernails, consistent with signs of a physical struggle during a sexual assault.

The lawyer also questioned the direction of the investigation, demanding that the survivor’s phone be examined and its call history presented in court. He stated that only after further information is available would it be clear whether the case qualifies legally as rape.

So far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Alongside Monojit Mishra, the police have detained two other students from the same law college — Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — as well as the college’s security guard, Pinaki Bandyopadhyay.

The assault allegedly took place inside the guard’s room on campus. CCTV footage captured the woman being dragged by the accused, supporting her claims of being attacked.

Doctors who examined the student confirmed findings of forced sexual activity, including bite marks and injuries from nails, strengthening the case against the accused.

The investigation is ongoing, with forensic analysis and further questioning expected to follow.
