Three huge film releases dominated most important Summer month, April this year. Last year, Covid-19 restrictions did not allow many releases and out of films that did manage to find their way to the theatres – Vakeel Saab, Uppena and Jathi Ratnalu did well. Few ticketing price issues did not allow some big budget releases later in the year. Crossing all the hurdles, RRR, Radhe Shyam, Bangarraju, KGF Chapter 2, Ghani and Acharya starring young and old stars of Telugu Cinema have released till date this year.
RRR continued its grip on box office for three weeks post release and two of them have been in April. Ghani couldn’t register a decent opening as RRR mania continued. Jr. NTR and Ram Charan starrer grossed over 1000 crores worldwide and became an Industry Hit in Telugu States. Varun Tej’s Ghani ended up as the young actor’s first disaster post Fidaa success.
KGF Chapter 2 captured the market like a tsunami. It collected over 125 crores gross in Telugu states, almost on par with any star hero hit film collections. A non-Telugu film creating such records after being dubbed in Telugu is first time for any Kannada film. Yash and Prashanth Neel have become hot favorites. Prabhas film with director Prashanth Neel, Salaar is eagerly awaited by fans and trade alike.
But Trade received a huge shock towards the end of the month with Acharya. Starring Megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan and being directed by Koratala Siva, the film should have been able to rake in good moolah at the box office on the opening day and weekend. But it failed to do so and it remains as the biggest disaster for both actors and director. Movie collected close to 48 crores share and the talk is too bad.
Thalapathy Vijay’s Beast had a good opening day collections but collapsed from the Day 2 as KGF Chapter 2 took over. Tapsee’s Mishan Impossible remained another disaster for Matinee Entertainments who also produced Acharya. We can conclude that RRR and KGF Chapter 2 dominated this Summer till now and Mahesh Babu’s Sarkaaru Vaari Paata, Varun Tej and Venkatesh’s F3 releasing in May will be seen as rays of hope by trade in May.
