Hollywood actor and producer Tom Cruise is set to receive a special Oscar recognising his long-standing influence on cinema, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday. This honour comes shortly after the release of Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning, the eighth film in the popular spy-action series.
Cruise will be given an honorary award, which is reserved for individuals who have made a lasting mark on the film world. Throughout his career, Cruise has been widely respected for performing his own daring stunts and for supporting traditional cinema screenings. He has previously been nominated for top acting awards for roles in Jerry Maguire and Born on the Fourth of July.
Alongside Tom Cruise, three other notable figures will be celebrated: actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, production designer Wynn Thomas, and country music icon Dolly Parton, who will receive a separate humanitarian award.
Celebrating a Diverse Group of Artists
Academy President Janet Yang praised the honourees, saying they each represent excellence in different areas of filmmaking and have helped shape the industry in meaningful ways.
Debbie Allen is being recognised for her creative work in film, television, and stage. She has also choreographed several major award shows and starred in memorable productions like Fame and Ragtime.
Wynn Thomas, known for designing the visual look of acclaimed films such as Malcolm X, A Beautiful Mind, and Hidden Figures, will be acknowledged for his artistic achievements behind the scenes.
Dolly Parton Recognised for Charity Work
Dolly Parton will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her lifelong dedication to charitable causes. In addition to her music and acting career, Parton has launched programmes to promote reading among children and support education in her home region of Tennessee. Her literacy project, the Imagination Library, has provided hundreds of millions of free books to young readers.
Award Ceremony This November
All four recipients will be honoured at the Governors Awards ceremony, scheduled for 16 November 2025. The event will be held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
The Academy uses the Governors Awards to shine a light on individuals who have made outstanding contributions to film and to society, whether through creativity, leadership, or generosity.
