Tollywood’s 2025 began with high energy and strong expectations. The Sankranti season brought three major films to the big screen – Ram Charan’s Game Changer, Balakrishna’s Daaku Maharaj, and Venkatesh’s Sankranthiki Vostunnam. Festival releases are always important for Telugu cinema, and this year was no different. While all three films competed for attention, it was Venkatesh’s Sankranthiki Vostunnam that emerged as the clear winner. The film recorded impressive numbers and quickly became a regional super hit, giving fans and theatre owners a reason to celebrate.

After such a strong beginning, many expected the success to continue during the crucial summer holidays. Summer is traditionally the second-biggest season for Tollywood, with families flocking to theatres to enjoy star-studded blockbusters. But in 2025, the season turned out to be unusually quiet. Very few big projects were released, and those that did appear failed to make a lasting impact. As a result, no hero or production house managed to make full use of the holiday window.

This poor performance was felt throughout the industry. Distributors and exhibitors, who usually rely on summer releases to keep business flowing, faced disappointing returns. Audiences too expressed their frustration, as they had been looking forward to at least one major entertainer. The dull response also underlined the need for better scheduling and planning of film releases in future years.

Fortunately, the second half of the year offered some relief. From August onwards, a number of mid-range films, along with several dubbed releases, brought crowds back into cinemas. While these films did not reach blockbuster status, they provided steady support for theatres and reminded everyone of Tollywood’s ability to bounce back even after setbacks.

Tollywood’s 2025 so far has shown both strengths and weaknesses – a festive season filled with energy, a disappointing summer, and a slow but steady recovery in later months. Industry experts believe the final quarter, packed with high-profile releases, will be decisive in shaping the year’s overall report. Fans remain hopeful that Tollywood will end 2025 on a strong and memorable note.
