The untold story of Jayasudha in Lakshmana Rekha

Jayasudha

Jayasudha

Legendary actress Jayasudha has been a shining star in Telugu cinema for more than five decades. Known as a ‘natural actress’, she earned a special place in the hearts of audiences with her powerful performances. From playing small character roles to becoming a leading heroine, Jayasudha’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. She worked with generations of stars, from NTR and ANR to today’s heroes, proving her versatility in every role offered.

An interesting story has now come to light about how Jayasudha’s film career truly began. Senior director Gopalakrishna, who made his debut with the film Lakshmana Rekha, recently shared some memories as the film completed 50 years since its release.

Before becoming a director, Gopalakrishna worked as an assistant director for Veerabhimanyu. When he got the chance to direct Lakshmana Rekha, a remake of a Marathi film, he faced a challenge in casting the lead actress. Producers gave him the freedom to choose, but many established heroines were not available at that time.

It was then that Gopalakrishna watched the film Nomu, where a young Jayasudha appeared in a small role. Impressed by her natural screen presence, he decided she should play the heroine in Lakshmana Rekha.

On the film’s launch day, veteran actor Gummadi was surprised when Jayasudha was introduced as the main lead. He questioned her experience, as she had never acted as a heroine before and could not speak Telugu fluently. Even her parents were doubtful and tried to step away from the project, saying she might not be suitable.

However, Gopalakrishna convinced them, and Jayasudha was finally cast. The film became a big success, marking the real beginning of her long and glorious career. From that point, there was no looking back for Jayasudha, who went on to become one of the most respected and admired actresses in the Telugu film industry.

Her journey shows how one opportunity can change the destiny of a talented artist forever
