TG Vishwa Prasad row with art directors heats up in Tollywood

The Telugu Film Art Directors Association has criticised producer TG Vishwa Prasad for reportedly calling art directors an ‘art mafia’ in a recent interview. The association has strongly denied the allegation and demanded that Vishwa Prasad retract his comments, emphasising the vital role art directors play in film productions.

The controversy arises amid the ongoing strike in Tollywood, where film workers have called for a 30% wage hike, leading the Film Federation and Film Chamber to halt shooting schedules across the industry. The association highlighted that art directors are crucial during shoots, often making adjustments on set under producers’ guidance, which can increase or decrease costs.

In their official note, the association stressed that producers are always aware of these financial implications. They stated that misrepresenting art directors’ work in the media is unfair and could harm industry relations. The association also reminded that misunderstandings about expenses or set decisions can occur, but these should be discussed directly rather than blamed publicly.

TG Vishwa Prasad has since responded, clarifying that his comments were misinterpreted. He explained that his intention was to address systemic issues where established individuals sometimes block opportunities for new talent for personal gain. He insisted that he supports creating opportunities for emerging professionals and encouraging skill development within the industry.

The statement has stirred discussions in Tollywood circles about the delicate balance between creative control, financial oversight, and respect for the technicians who bring films to life. Both the producer and the association appear keen to resolve the matter without escalating tensions further, especially while the industry navigates the strike and its broader implications for ongoing productions.
