Suriya and Jyothika’s daughter Dia has stepped into the film industry, but not as an actress as many expected. At just 17, she has made her debut as a director with a short film titled Leading Light.
For years, Dia’s pictures on social media have drawn attention, with many assuming she might follow her parents into acting. However, she has surprised fans by taking a different path behind the camera.
Her debut film Leading Light, produced under her parents’ banner 2D Entertainment, runs for 13 minutes. The documentary-style short focuses on the lives of women gaffers in Bollywood — technicians responsible for lighting on film sets. Dia highlights their struggles with heavy workloads, physical and emotional challenges, and societal barriers.
The film follows the journeys of three women gaffers: Hetal Dedhia, Priyanka Singh, and Leena Gangurde. Through their stories, Dia showcases their determination and resilience in a male-dominated field.
Currently, Leading Light is being screened at the Regency Theatre in Los Angeles as part of its Oscar-qualifying run. It will be shown daily at noon from 26 September to 2 October. This opens the possibility of the film qualifying for the 2026 Oscars in the Best Documentary Short Film category.
Suriya made his acting debut at 22 with Nerukku Ner, while Jyothika began her career at 19 with Doli Saja Ke Rakhna. Dia, however, has entered the industry even earlier, marking her first project at 17.
Her proud parents expressed their happiness at her directorial debut and praised her decision to tell a story with such social relevance.
Suriya and Jyothika, one of South Indian cinema’s most popular star couples, met while working together, fell in love, and married 19 years ago. They have two children — Dia and her younger brother Dev.
With Leading Light, Dia has not only surprised the industry but also shown promise as a filmmaker with a unique voice.
