It’s been 50 years since Sholay first hit cinemas in India and changed the face of Bollywood forever. Now, the legendary film is making a comeback, and fans couldn’t be more excited.
The full, restored version of the 1975 classic will be shown tomorrow at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy. And this isn’t just any version; it includes scenes that were cut before release, including the original ending that censors once forced the makers to change.
The screening will take place in Bologna’s stunning Piazza Maggiore, a huge open-air space that’ll give this return the grand stage it deserves.
Directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by the iconic duo Salim-Javed, Sholay isn’t just a film; it’s a part of India’s cultural DNA. With unforgettable characters like Jai and Veeru (played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra) and the terrifying Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), the story of two small-time crooks taking on a brutal bandit in a dusty village has stayed with people for generations.
When it first released, Sholay ran for five years straight at a cinema in Mumbai. Its dialogue became part of everyday speech, RD Burman’s music was everywhere, and records and cassettes flew off the shelves.
It went on to be voted “Film of the Millennium” by BBC India and was named the greatest Indian movie ever made in a British Film Institute poll.
Now, with the original cut finally being shown the way it was meant to be seen, Sholay is ready to wow audiences all over again and remind everyone why it became a legend in the first place.
