Karan Johar is one of the most popular and successful directors in Indian Cinema. He made films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham, My Name is Khan. Now, he has come up with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Ranveer Singh has been cast in a KJO film for the first time. Alia Bhatt is working with him for the second time after her debut, Student of the Year. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani has opened all-over world on 28th July, 2023. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Plot:
Rocky(Ranveer Singh) belongs to Randhawa Family. They are a Punjabi Rich family with a great profitable business. Matriarch of the family, Dhanalakshmi Randhawa(Jaya Bachchan) builds family business Dhanalakshmi Sweets with her Grandma’s Laddoo recipe. Her husband Kanwal(Dharmendra) is a poet and due to an accident looses ability to make memories. He remembers at a party, Jamini Chatterjee(Shabana Azmi). Rocky tracks her to be grandmother of News anchor, Rani Chatterjee(Alia Bhatt). Chatterjee family is quite opposite to Randhawas. Rani and Rocky decide to unite Jamini and Kanwal. Rocky Aur Rani Analysis:
Karan Johar after a gap of 7 years came up with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. He did Ae Dil Hai Mushkil before this movie. As an expert in love and family movies, many expected this one to be another great one from him. Karan Johar, as the writer, after My Name is Khan seems to have weared off into slightly confused zone. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani tries to bring back the memories of his old movies and actual old classic songs as well. He did not fear from showing Dharamendra and Shabana Azmi romance and used it as a mirror to Rocky and Rani. The ballad he used for the sequence presents us with great choice of old classics, appropriately to the cause.
But then the writing is not as sharp as the premise needed it to be. Drama doesn’t hold up to the potential it presents to have. Also, movie circles around the same topics before they get addressed. Comedy works and the choice of songs also works. But the conflict doesn’t hold to the length of the time due to the predicability. Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi are good in the roles written for them. The call-backs to their old movies and to great classics work. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani needed to be more compact and be remembered for Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
Their characters don’t really showcase much more than what we get in first few minutes. Ranveer Singh did well in a character that is tailor-made for him. But he can pull-off even more meat. Alia Bhatt is good but her character also needed much more depth. Performances of the cast and technical values are good. Music by Pritam could have been better. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani works to an extent due to the drama scenes that work due to performances. Had the writing been as good, movie could have been another KJO magical romance. You can give this one a try, as he makes it one-time watchable.
