Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has recently opened up about an interesting behind-the-scenes moment from his iconic debut film Shiva (1989). In a candid discussion, Varma shared that he had once turned down a suggestion to cast veteran actor Mohan Babu in an important role in Shiva, a decision that raised eyebrows at the time but ultimately defined the film’s tone and direction.

Varma revealed that during the early stages of Shiva, a well-known personality from the industry had recommended Mohan Babu for a strong character part. The actor, who was already a big name in Telugu cinema back then, was seen as a perfect fit for the role. However, Varma — who was making his first film without any prior experience as an assistant director — decided to go against the suggestion. He believed that casting an established face might distract from the story and make the film feel less authentic.

Instead, Varma chose to work with relatively new or lesser-known actors to maintain a sense of realism and freshness. That creative gamble worked in his favour, Shiva, starring Nagarjuna Akkineni and Amala Akkineni, went on to become a path-breaking hit. The film’s raw energy, innovative camera work, and gritty storytelling changed the face of Telugu cinema and inspired a new wave of filmmakers.

Varma’s recollection of the Mohan Babu casting story offers fans a glimpse into his fearless approach and determination to do things differently. He explained that saying ‘no’ to an established star was not an act of arrogance, but rather a creative choice that helped him build the unique world of Shiva.

With Shiva set for a re-release on 14 November in a restored format, these behind-the-scenes revelations have reignited nostalgia among fans, reminding them why Ram Gopal Varma’s debut continues to hold a legendary place in Indian film history.
