Pavithra Menon questions Kerala-based role of Janhvi Kapoor

A fresh wave of debate has swept through the entertainment industry after singer Pavithra Menon openly questioned the casting of Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor in a Kerala-centric role in Param Sundari.

Pavithra argued that the part would have been more authentic and impactful if played by a performer from Kerala. Citing Janhvi’s dialogue — “Mai Thek Patil Damodaran Sundaram Pillai Kerala se” — she suggested that Malayalam-speaking talent would naturally bring greater depth and cultural accuracy to such characters.

The singer challenged the decision-making of the film’s makers, asking whether Malayalam artistes were considered “less capable” or if the assumption was that only Hindi-speaking actors could do justice to such roles. “Why not give these opportunities to those who share the same cultural and linguistic background as the character?” she asked pointedly.

Pavithra Menon clarified that her remarks were not intended as a personal attack on Janhvi Kapoor. “I have nothing against Janhvi. My concern is about recognising and providing opportunities for local talent. I know Hindi myself, so assuming that people from Kerala speak only their regional language is outdated. Back in the 1990s, when we needed Punjabi characters in Malayalam films, we still cast local artists. Times have changed, cinema has evolved, and we now respect each other’s languages. But in such times, it’s not fair to sideline local actors in stories rooted in their own soil,” she explained.

Her comments have gone viral on social media, sparking discussions about authenticity in casting and equal representation in Indian cinema. Several Malayalam film and music industry figures have supported her stance, highlighting the importance of giving local talent a platform in culturally specific stories.

As the debate continues, it raises important questions about whether commercial stardom should outweigh cultural authenticity, a conversation that could shape future casting decisions in Indian films.
