Biswapati Sarkar, Amit Golani and Sameer Saxena have been well-known for bringing great web content revolution in India during their stinct at TVF – The Viral Fever. To their credit, they have created many web-series that we love to watch again and again. They are behind series like Yeh Mera Family, Pitchers Season-1, Permanent Roommates. They have put up their own production company Posham Pa Pictures. They had a successful debut with Jaadugar and then continued it with survival thriller, Kaala Paani. Now, they have come up with satire comedy court room drama Maamla Legal Hai. Let’s discuss about it in detail.
Plot:
Lawyer VD Thyagi(Ravi Kishan) runs the show at District Court Patparganj. He is the hero of the Court and no one can challenge his authority over the subject and intelligence, in the court. A young lawyer, Ananya Shroff(Naila Grewal), Harvard graduate, decides to start her practice in the court and Thyagi keeps pushing her into a corner. Assistant lawyer Sujata Negi(Nidhi Bisht) assists Thyagi first and changes her loyalties to Ananya, gradually. Things get interesting with with senior lawyer Mahindra Phorey(Yashpal Sharma) and Judge Bainsla(Tanvi Azmi) entering into the picture. Watch the series, to know more.
Analysis:
Right from their days in TVF, Biswapati Sarkar and Sameer Saxena are known for captivating audiences with simple and healthy humor. Here, they have tried the same as producers with Saurabh Khanna as lead writer. The writing by Kunal Anega and Saurabh Khanna duo is quite quirky and entertaining throughout the series.
But the final episodes could have been better as the starting episodes have much to offer and feels like potential has not been completed unpacked. Still, the satire they offer on major issues and court proceedings do land pretty well at important places.
Mainly, Ravi Kishan is charismatic in his portrayal and he holds our attention as VD Thyagi with his one-liners and pompous attitude. Yashpal Sharma and his showdown scenes are the highlight of this series. Naila Grewal does well but not a stand out like the seniors.
Nidhi Bisht has ease in her comic timing and she fits the bill perfectly. It almost seems like a tailor-made character specially designed for her. She shines in major sequences and her expressive face has a quality to connect with audiences. Tanvi Azmi and Brijendra Kala deliver their lines well, too.
The series has a quality of growing on you like Panchayat, as the characters don’t try to be funny for the sake of it. The court room tensions and power struggles provide enough material to engage us. But the writing could have been better and it would have been a perfect series. Still, the characters are well-realised for us to hope to see them in much well-thought scenes for another season.
Positives:
Ensemble cast performances
Intelligent comedy
Court room setting
One-liners
Connectible characters
Negatives:
Slightly slower than anticipated
Final episodes underwhelm a bit
Could have been better in handling some conflicts
Maamla Legal Hai Web-Series Bottom-line: Good Watch
