Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi released worldwide 7th September, 2023. Atlee Kumar debuted in Hindi with this film and he took GK Vishnu, Anirudh Ravichander, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi along with him. Shah Rukh Khan after a gap of 4 years, came back with Pathaan in a big way. He promised to deliver even bigger action masala entertainer with Jawan. Right from the announcement teaser, the movie has been able to garner huge interest. Let’s discuss about Jawan in detail.
Jawan Plot:
In a border village, a wounded Jawan(Shah Rukh Khan) gets treated for his wounds. At that time, few goons attack the place to evacuate them and he saves the village to become their messiah. After the fight, Jawan is known to be suffering with amnesia. A young kid, promises to Jawan to find out his real whereabouts. 30 years later, we see a train being hijacked and aged Vikram Rathod(Shah Rukh Khan) with his ladies gang, takes 385 travellers as hostages and demands ransom from businessman Kaali Gaikwad(Vijay Sethupathi). He pays without hesitation as Kaali’s daughter is also in the train. Commander Narmada(Nayanthara) heads the operation to find Vikram Rathod but he escapes in front of her, with clever deception.
It is revealed that Vikram Rathod is actually young Azad(Shah Rukh Khan). Azad is a Jailer and he is responsible for a Women’s jail. He is known for running the place with progressive attitude and his ladies gang are revealed to be convicts. After a while, Azad and Narmada enter into wedlock and on their wedding night, they are captured by Kaali’s henchmen. Jawan returns into the scene to save Azad and Narmada. Why did he return? Jawan Analysis:
Jawan deals with social atrocities and government negligence. It talks about right people going to jail due to cunningness of do-wrongers and their overtly selfish motives. The convenience and free pass they get from political leaders and system due to their influence and money. Atlee tries to bring elements of Shankar films and mix them with International film ideas. Majorly, Money Heist seems to have “inspired” him more for this screenplay. He depends on Shah Rukh Khan star power and charisma to carry the film and story forward. His action episodes and screenplay are designed in a way to suit the star and elevate his action prowess at every beat. Atlee succeeds in making Jawan, a larger-than-life commercial Entertainer.
Shah Rukh Khan in Pathaan looked a little bit more vulnerable to the villain. Here, Jawan has him in complete “God” mode that South Indian commercial films often celebrate their hero as. SRK fits the bill, by being different personalities in get-ups and his act as Vikram Rathod, in second half, takes the bigger cake. He has been able to show a different level of swag as a mass action hero. His performance in monologues also shine better. But Jawan is more about his action prowess and he stuns you in many sequences with his inventiveness in playing to the gallery. Jawan needs him to do that and he overpowers everyone else with utmost ease.
Nayanthara is good in action sequences and looked damn gorgeous. But she did not have much to do in the second half. Vijay Sethupathi is good in many portions. Sanjay Dutt in a cameo, adds to the gallery-pleasing quality of the film. Jawan works mainly, because every actor delivered their best and action sequences click. Anirudh Ravichander BGM elevates major sequences and two songs also have that theatre vibing quality. GK Vishnu visuals and Ruben cuts keep up with the vision of the director. Atlee Kumar is a firm believer in mass masala and he dished out same. He concentrated on showcasing SRK as a complete action Hero from South and succeeded. But he did not care about logics or continuous threads. He narrated Jawan in problem-cause-solution format and that gets monotonous. Also, we get reminded of many films from Shankar. Still, Atlee holds our interest by putting all the onus on SRK’s able shoulders. We can conclude that Jawan delivered on what it promised in the Prevue, a non-apologetic commercial potboiler.
