Chandramukhi turned out to be biggest blockbuster for Rajinikanth after a disappointment like Baba. While the movie worked at box office, it also became a cult classic among popular horror mainstream genre films. People empathised with the characters of Chandramukhi and P. Vasu wanted to revisit it as he has been planning it for a decade. Raghava Lawrence and Kangana Ranaut came on-board instead of original cast. Let’s discuss how this Chandramukhi 2 turns out to be.
Chandramukhi 2 Plot:
Chandramukhi 2 takes off after 17 years of original story of Chandramukhi. Family of a wealthy scion(Radhikaa Sarathkumar) goes through issues and their Guruji(Rao Ramesh) advises them to pray in their Family God’s temple in birth place. She asks even her estranged-now-dead daughter’s children as well. Their care-taker Madhan(Raghava Lawrence) accompanies them. Basavaiah(Vadivelu) gets Chandramukhi or Vettaiah palace from Kailash. He gives it on lease to this family for their stay. The family is again affected by Chandramukhi(Kangana Ranaut). How will they save themselves as Doctor Eeshwar is not available for them, now? Chandramukhi 2 Analysis:
Chandramukhi worked because director tried to give scientific explanation to paranormal activity. This distinctive approach made the movie something fresh for audiences and became a cult classic. Now, Chandramukhi 2 is more or less an attempt at re-visiting the same script once again. Nagavalli, the original second part, had more connections to Chandramukhi than this heavily re-written and watered down version. Here, director gave up on the approach that really worked in the first one. P. Vasu actually re-worked Manichitrathazhu and the balance between scientific facts and beliefs, made it what it is. This sequel is a spoof of that original with laughable performances and scenes.
P. Vasu seems to have taken a greater interest in horror films but he wanted to give what audiences expect from Raghava Lawrence. As Lawrence became popular for horror-comedy genre films, he tried to marry his Chandramukhi to Muni, in a way. And that dilutes the impact created by the first one and almost makes Chandramukhi 2, a spoof of original. Kangana Ranaut looked beautiful and performed well. Raghava Lawrence is good in few portions but not all. MM Keeravani music doesn’t really add to the film’s impact. On the whole, Chandramukhi should not have been woken up again!
