Senior Telugu film producer C Kalyan has spoken strongly about the growing problem of movie piracy, following the recent arrest of the man believed to be behind the popular illegal website iBomma. He said the film industry has suffered for too long and called for stronger laws and strict punishment for those involved in piracy.
Speaking to the media in Hyderabad, Kalyan said that piracy is not just about leaking films online, but is a serious crime that destroys the hard work of thousands of people. He explained that producers invest crores of rupees, and hundreds of workers depend on each film for their livelihood. When movies are leaked online, the entire system is affected, from junior artists to technicians, theatre owners and distributors.
He praised the police for successfully tracking down the accused, saying that their effort has given hope to the entire film fraternity. However, he also warned that this should not be treated as just another case. According to him, people who run large piracy networks must face tougher action, otherwise new groups will continue the same illegal business.
Kalyan also appealed to the public to stop watching pirated content. He said that audiences may feel they are saving money by watching movies for free, but they are actually harming the future of good cinema. If piracy continues, producers will hesitate to make quality films, and fresh talent will lose opportunities.
He added that awareness campaigns should be started in schools, colleges and social media to educate people about the damage caused by piracy. He believes that true change will come only when both government and citizens take responsibility.
Many industry members have supported his statement, saying that the iBomma case should be a turning point in India’s fight against digital piracy.
