It is also important to consult your doctor if you are experiencing other symptoms as well, such as shortness of breath, chest pain or losing weight for no reason.

If you are coughing from a COVID infection and it persists for more than 4 weeks after the initial infection, then it is important to get a chest X-ray. A COVID infection could cause scarring of the lungs and fibrosis in some people. Long-lasting coughs can also be a sign of cancers and long COVID.
