Yamini Krishnamurthy, an Indian legendary dancer, who won Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016, passed away on 3rd August. She has been suffering from ill health from few days and her family shifted her to a hospital. While being treated for the illness and fighting it, she passed away in the hospital.
She was born in Madanapalli, Chittoor District but was brought up in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. Yamini Krishnamurthy made a name for himself as a Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer. Born in 1940, she started taking Indian classical dance forms to International level by touring foreign countries. She mixed Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam forms in several plays as well.
She set up Yamini School of Dance in Hauz Khas, New Delhi to mentor many young Indian dancers. Yamini dedicated her life to promoting Indian classical dance forms and always innovated to take them to younger generations. Her approach to the classical forms led to many taking up for the form and enjoying it.
She remained unmarried and considered all her disciples as her children. Yamini Krishnamurthy’s autobiography “A Passion for Dance” worked like magic to bring awareness among many youngsters towards classical dance forms. She won many accolades and throughout her life kept pushing the idea of expressing freely through dance, a viable and great of communication.
