The Power of Laparoscopy: A New Era in Kidney Stone Treatment

AINU Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, September 2024: Kidney stones are usually small, but a rare and severe case recently emerged involving a large staghorn stone that filled an entire kidney in a 62-year-old patient from Visakhapatnam. These staghorn stones form through the crystallization of minerals over time and often go unnoticed because they do not obstruct urine flow, leading to late detection and treatment. Consultant urologist Dr. Amit Saple shared insights into this unique case.

The patient, a farmer, sought treatment at AINU Hospital after experiencing occasional pain in his left side. Ultrasound and CT scans revealed the large staghorn stone, and his kidney function was severely compromised, operating at only 18%, according to Dr. Saple.

Traditionally, such stones are removed either through a kidney puncture to break them internally or via open surgery with an incision. In this case, the medical team employed a laparoscopic pyelolithotomy, accessing the stone from the front of the abdomen instead of through the kidney. “This minimally invasive technique allowed us to remove the entire stone, including all its extensions, without breaking it,” Dr. Saple explained.

Advancements in medical technology have made laparoscopic procedures possible, significantly reducing recovery time and potential complications compared to open surgery. After the procedure, the team placed a stent to ensure proper urine flow, which will be removed in a month. The patient experienced no complications post-surgery and was discharged just two days later, highlighting the effectiveness and efficiency of this treatment approach.

The AINU medical team, including urologists Dr. Amit Saple, Dr. Ravindra Varma, Dr. Sridhar, and anesthetist Dr. Shyam, played a crucial role in this successful operation, demonstrating advanced technical skills in managing this rare and challenging case.
