The G7 Summit is a yearly meeting where the leaders of seven of the world’s most advanced economies come together to discuss global issues.
The G7 countries are:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Germany
- France
- Italy
- Canada
- Japan
The European Union also takes part, though it’s not an official member.
What do they discuss?
At the summit, leaders talk about
- The global economy
- Climate change
- Security and conflict
- Health issues
- Technological developments
- And, as in your previous example, major geopolitical tensions (like Ukraine-Russia or Iran-Israel)
It’s not a law-making body, but the G7 can influence world policy and signal where powerful democracies stand on major international issues.
World leaders gathered in the quiet mountain town of Kananaskis, Alberta, from 16 to 17 June for the 51st G7 summit a high-stakes meeting focused on global conflict, economic cooperation, and climate challenges.
This year’s summit brought several new leaders to the table. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Japan’s Shigeru Ishiba, and Canada’s own PM Mark Carney were all attending their first G7. It also marked Donald Trump’s return to the group as US president for the first time since 2019, adding extra attention to the event.
Tensions were already high before the summit began. The Middle East crisis, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and trade disputes were top of the agenda. Canadian PM Carney, who hosted the event, said the summit aimed to show unity “in a time when the world feels anything but united.”
Alongside the core G7 members Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US leaders from several other countries were also invited. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended, as did the presidents of Brazil and Mexico. However, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto declined the invites with Prabowo opting to meet Russia’s Vladimir Putin instead.
This was the second time Kananaskis hosted the summit, the last being in 2002. In the backdrop of stunning scenery, the focus remained on serious talks, from security threats and economic instability to climate action and rebuilding trust between world powers.
In short, it was a summit full of firsts, hard questions, and urgent challenges, with world leaders trying to find common ground in increasingly divided times.
