Iran Oil Returns to India After 7 Years Amid West Asia Tensions

Two oil tankers from Iran arrived in India amid tensions in West Asia. Almost 7 years after, Iranian oil come to country. According to ship tracking data, Iran’s largest oil tanker ‘Facility‘ anchored at Sikka port in Gujarat after Sunday night. These ships belongs to National Iranian Tanker Company (Crude oil) left Kharg Island in the middle of March. It is reported to be carrying around 2 million barrels of crude oil. At the same time, another ship named ‘Jaya‘ reached Paradeep port in Odisha, based on ship tracking data. They have come from Kharg with about 2 million barrels of crude oil. It is not clear who bought the oil in these vessels.

India stopped buying Iranian oil due to sanctions imposed by the superpower. Due to this, since 2019, there has been no transportation of Iranian oil to India. In this order, due to the recent war in West Asia, concerns about the shortage of oil were raised, and the US slightly relaxed the restrictions on Tehran’s oil. US has given permission to buy Iranian oil tankers in sea waters. It is reported that Iranian oil ships have reached India as part of this. On the other hand, the superpower is preparing to block the Strait of Hormuz after the failure of peace talks between America and Iran.
India is the third largest oil importing country in the world. It is known that India has recently announced that it is ready to buy oil from Iran as well as other countries due to the shortage of energy.
