Russia Suggests India as Long-Term Mediator in US-Iran Tensions

Iran-US Mediation: A meeting of Foreign Ministers of BRICS countries was held in New Delhi. The comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in this meeting became a sensation. Russia’s foreign minister said India could play a “long-term mediator” role in the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. Currently, Pakistan is playing the role of a mediator in Iran’s war. However, Pakistan’s mediation did not yield results. Iran is alleging that Pakistan is putting America’s proposals in front of them and not paying attention to their proposals. In this context, Russia’s proposal became crucial.

“Pakistan can help now to negotiate between the US and Iran to resolve the issues. But if a long-term mediator is needed, India with its long diplomatic experience can play that role,” said the Russian minister. However, Lavrov’s comments may irritate Pakistan. Israel, UAE and Iran are also expressing doubts about Pakistan’s mediation. Recently US Senator Lindsey Graham said that he does not believe in Pakistan’s mediation.

The American media claimed that Pakistan helped Iran protect its military aircraft from US and Israeli attacks and allowed Iranian aircraft to be stationed at Nur Khan Air Base in Pakistan. At the same time, India has close relations with America and Iran. This is why Russia has made this proposal.
