I’m hurt by those two: Will Smith regrets passing on Inception and Matrix

Hollywood star Will Smith has revealed that he turned down the lead role in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Inception, all because he couldn’t quite grasp what the film was about at the time. Speaking in a recent interview with Kiss Xtra radio, Smith said he struggled to make sense of the complex storyline and passed on the opportunity. The part eventually went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the central role in the mind-bending thriller that became a global hit. Inception went on to earn more than $800 million worldwide and is now considered one of Nolan’s most iconic works.

This isn’t the first time Smith has opened up about saying no to major films. Back in 2019, he posted a video on YouTube explaining why he had also declined the chance to star in The Matrix. At the time, he didn’t quite click with the Wachowski siblings’ creative vision. Describing their pitch, he recalled it was more focused on camera techniques than plot, leaving him confused. “They were like, ‘Imagine you’re in a fight… and you stop mid-jump… and people can see you from all angles.’” Smith admitted he just wasn’t convinced at the time.

There was another missed opportunity. Quentin Tarantino had approached Smith for the lead in Django Unchained. The role ultimately went to Jamie Foxx, while DiCaprio played the villain. The film later won two Oscars and became a critical and commercial success.
While Will Smith has no shortage of box office hits to his name, these reflections serve as a reminder that even A-list stars can second-guess scripts that go on to become major cinematic milestones. And sometimes, not understanding a story in the moment can mean missing out on a future classic.
