Delhi Government has given a shock to Ola, Rapido, Uber taxi service providers. They banned Ola, Rapido and Uber bike taxi services in the city. Delhi Government has stated that as bikes come under non-transport vehicles, they took this decision to ban bike taxi services in the city. In 1988, Delhi Motor Transport Law has prohibited any kind of non-transport vehicles being used as taxi services in the city. Delhi Government has confirmed that they will bring new Motor Laws for 2-wheeler, 4-wheeler, 6-wheeler and Aggregator policy.
Ola, Uber and Rapido have brought bike taxi services as costumers have been asking them to reduce the prices for 4-wheeler taxis. They introduced bike taxis, so that people will find them affordable, cheap and at times easy to commute in busy cities. Delhi Government has explained that as bikes lack any emergency button service to alert police or any immediate contact members, women safety has become a concern. Since, cases of rape, sexual abuse, harassment of women, in particular are increasing in Capital city, they have taken this decision. Delhi Government seems to be taking all possible measures to ensure safety of passengers.
Rapido has recently started late-night call service to passengers after they take their vehicle service post 10 PM, in the night. Uber has introduced live tracking and emergency contact sharing to ensure safety of passengers. Well, Delhi Government decision seems to be a reaction to curtail the rising harassment victims and ensure safety. They have also introduced penalties, fines up to Rs.5,000, Rs.10,000 for those who run bike taxies. Delhi Government also stated that along with Rs.10,000 fine, repeat offenders will be liable to jail term and driving license will be seized for three years.
